Hello all, & Rajendra P Kerkar, Has anyone on Goanet visited those caves. Does anyone know what is in them. Please write directly to me if need be. On an upcoming trip (if all goes well, early 2009), I would like to make sumi (ink as watercolor) drawings of the same. Any help much appreciated. perhaps, we could do this as a small excursion if there is interest. Another thought -- one could learn how to make impressions / rubbings off of stone carvings, etc. Following links will provide will give a good idea of what a takuhon is. In Japanese takuhon, in Chinese fa-t'ieh. It is frottage (rubbing) but the technique and materials are different. http://www1.odn.ne.jp/j-kingdom/28.html Of course one must take care to preserve the original surface, in Goa, laterite; and so use suitable techniques. Also a good skill to offer to the ASI. OK, thats a hope. 2. http://www2.uiah.fi/conferences/impact/yabuta/yabuta.html 3. http://www.tnm.go.jp/en/servlet/Con?pageId=D01&processId=02&event_id=359&event_idx=1&initdate=2004/05/01&dispdate=2004/06/05 4. http://www.takuhon.com/nani.htm venantius j pinto ---------------------------------------------------- >From Joel Almeida's Goaclips: Rock caves near Mayem need urgent attention: A rock cut cave at Varpal, 5 km from Bicholim town on the way to Chorao via Mayem, Haturli, and three single celled rock cut caves of Divgali of the pre-Portuguese period lie neglected and need urgent attention. This man-made rock cut cave at Varpal is a unique example of architectural heritage of Goa's pre-Portuguese period. Unfortunately, these caves have not evoked much response from either research scholars or heritage activitists and hence lie in a neglected condition. Five years ago, Vivekanand Itihas Sanshodhan Mandal, Keri-Sattari had brought this fact to the notice of the Archaeological Survey of India. [Rajendra P Kerkar, TOI]
