*Safeguarding Interests of Goans* MR Arwin Mesquita has rightly stated that Goa’s freedom fighters should address current issues destroying Goa and threatening the identity of Goans, rather than being pre-occupied with matters relating to re-naming of municipal gardens and roads bearing Portuguese names (NT, October 26). This calls for freeing the people of Goa from the clutches and machinations of irresponsible politicians hell-bent on selling our precious land to outsiders and reducing Goans to a minority with the influx of migrant population. The problem is of a serious nature which has even prompted one of Goa’s world famous architects to deplore the ‘second home’ concept in Goa by outsiders who, having captured Goa’s real estate market by buying flats and bungalows, are keeping them unoccupied till prices appreciate. If this trend continues, Goa will soon be in the possession of outsiders. One way to put an end to this racket, he suggests, is to impose heavy taxes on non-residents. Non-resident Goans, however, should be exempted. Mega projects have never proved beneficial to the aam admi and hence, low-cost housing is the only answer to the problem of acute shortage of housing. We can emulate the example of Tata housing development, which has undertaken low-cost housing projects in 9 cities, like Mumbai, Pune, Delhi, etc at very affordable prices.
