Shantaram set to quit RS as tenure nears end

NEW DELHI, APRIL 17

Goa’s representative in the Rajya Sabha, Shantaram Naik is set to call it a day as he completes his term in the House on July 28. In fact, Naik will be the first to retire among those completing their tenures in the Rajya Sabha.

There are no further retirements from the Rajya Sabha during the current year. Naik, who is one of the AICC secretaries, may, however, get another term as he is in good books of both Sonia Gandhi and Ahmed Patel and has just returned to Goa after overseeing the Congress election campaign in Tamil Nadu.

The next three retirements in the New Year will be on January 27 when Congress General Secretary Janardan Dwivedi, Secretary Parvez Hashmi and Dr Karan Singh, all elected from Delhi. Sixty-one-year-old Ahmed Patel, the most powerful man in the Congress after Sonia Gandhi as her political secretary, is also dropping hints that he may not seek yet another term in the Rajya Sabha as three terms in the House and two in the Lok Sabha are more than enough.

He is, however, quick to tell well-wishers that he is only thinking so and has not taken any final decision as he feels it would be unfair for him to seek the fourth term when the party refuses anybody more than three terms.

Dum Maro Dum Issue (HND): Meanwhile, Shantaram Naik has thanked Union Minister for Information and Broadcasting, Ambika Soni, for her prompt action in getting the objectionable dialogues deleted from the Hindi film ‘Dum Maro Dum’. Naik spoke to Jt Secretary in the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting , Deva Reddy, who confirmed that the dialogues had been deleted.

It may be recalled that Naik had sought revision of the decision of Central Broad of Film Certification which had passed the film and had prayed for the deletion of the objectionable dialogues by using powers under section 6 of the Cinematograph Act, 1952 and pending the revisional proceedings, revoke the certification by the Censor Board under the same section.

However, it appears that good sense prevailed with all the concerned and it appears that deletion of objectionable dialogues turned out to be a fairly simple task.

Naik has further said that Goans haveto be vigilant regarding attacks on the culture and the fair name of State. Some elements outside Goa and outside country too, would like to treat Goa as a money spinning machine, which Goans should not allow, said MP Shantaram Naik in a press release issued here.
