My mum was one of the nurses working with Dr V N Shirodkar in the
1950s at the Bombay Hospital, when he invented the 'Shirodkar's
stitch'. He often joked about his Goan origins, or so she told me. Of

As I browsing through the Chambers Dictionary (New Edition), I found a
entry, 'Shirodkar's operation' in it which means " 'an operation in which
the neck of the womb is closed with the suture to prevent miscarriage', (N V
Shirodkar, 1900-71, Indi
