Feast and tradition of St Sebastian chapel at Banfol Chinchinim
It is believed that the architecture of St Sebastian Chapel, at Bandfol, Chinchinim on junction of NH 17 was suggested a common man, by drawing it in sand and later perfected by the builder, who was neither an engineer nor architect as we understand to day. It is truely beautiful considering the times in which it was designed and executed The Lions Club of Chinchinm incorporated its principles and facets in its bus stop and won first prize in the category, it only strenghtens the fact that it is indeed unusual, aesthetic design and architecture that soothes the eyes The feast was thought of when the place was afflicted with scourge, most fearful of disease and it is confirmed that the feast and devotion to St Sebastan has indeed minimised the ill effects of diseases even to this date The feast is preceeded by LUMINARIES at Chinchinim Church premises, i.e. devotion to St Sebastian, celebrated by various wards of the village of Chinchinim. The daily pandals at this luminaries or very artistically and tastefully created and have been noted as unique tradition. It is laudable that specially at Dandeavddo, Holy Cross Chapel, non catholics have been enrolled as the members of the Chapel , though they are not part of all catholic, traditional, normal,religious ceremonies, It demostrates that people of different faith are living in harmony here, The public garden at Chinchinim venerates the images of Gods of all religions at the same level. The non catholics families resident in the immediate vicinity at Dandeavdoo, willingly participate with devotion, faith and reverence at the ceremony of luminaries to St Sebastian of the ward The Chapel of St Sebastian chapel is owned and manged by the members of Club of Dandeawadcares, situated at Mazagon Bombay. An annxe is also constructed with other meaningful facilities connected with the monument. Presently 8 memebers jointly sing praises, as the Presidents of St Sebastian feast with religious ceremonies on a grand scale, The faithfuls of surrounding villages of Assolna, Cuncolim, Panzorcone , even Canacona also pay their espects by their particiaption in ceremonies in various ways not only during novenas, but on other occasions too.
