On receipt of information last night that very inhuman treatment was being meted out to policemen posted at the Dr Shyama Prasad Mukherjee Stadium at Bambolim for duties related to the 2016 BRICS summit, I visited the site this morning to ascertain the facts. It was very disturbing.
>From 4th October a team of five policemen (one head constable and four constables) have been deployed there to guard those seven bullet proof Mercedes which have been brought in from Delhi for the use of the heads of nations attending the BRICS Summit. The five policemen are on duty round the clock with no provision made for even their basic amenities. A small tent has been erected under which they are huddled while not being provided even drinking water. They are also exposed to the mosquito menace during the night. The Goa Government has been more than once told by the Human Rights Commission that policemen are human beings and so they should be treated. Another eyesore at the same stadium is that huge fleet of INNOVA vehicles from Mumbai which have been hired by the government for the BRICS summit with the drivers living in their vehicles while using the area around the stadium to urinate and defecate. By the way can the Government please explain as to why vehicles from Goa could not be hired for this event?
