The fig leaf of the apolitical dhoti has finally slipped and
it ain't a pretty sight. In his screed in Gomantak Times
(Jan 7, 2008 ), Dr. Oscar Rebello, Convener of GBA, writes:
Dr. Rebello:
"Now that the SEZ magnum opus is sort of over, it would
be nice to roll out the credits and record our eternal
debt of gratitude to:
* The Congress-NCP-SGF government headed by a valiant,
forthright and amazingly far-sighted Digambar Kamat."
Let us piece together the sequence of events so that we
have a better understanding of this whole SEZ saga:
(a) The Congress-led govt screws Goa with 18 SEZs. Several
Congressmen both in Goa and Dilli allegedly make crores of
rupees in illegal, under-the-table dealings with the real estate
mafia.
(b) Goans unite and in one voice tell the Congress govt, "We
aren't going to take it anymore, if you go ahead with your
nefarious plans of selling Goa to outsiders, we shall skewer you."
(c) Upon hearing this, the valorous Congress leader Digu
loses his marbles and runs for help to Sonia madam in Dilli.
(d) The Goan people demand and take back what is rightfully
theirs - all of the Goan land which the Congress govt wanted
to steal and parcel off to the mafia.
(e) Dr. Rebello prostrates himself before Digu's lotus feet to record
his "eternal debt of gratitude" on behalf of the Goan people.
(f) Dr. Rebello then accuses Digu of valour, forthrightness and
amazing far-sightedness. Digu is deeply shocked and instantly
rejects all the charges Dr. Rebello has leveled against him. Digu
also complains of chest pain to avoid possible jail time.
(g) Digu is placed on a strict diet of nimbu-pani and is currently
unavailable for further comment.
Dr. Rebello continues with his disbursement of credit:
"*The opposition parties. Whatever else, the idealism
and romantic anti-establishment courage of Matanhy can
never die and even if one virulently opposes the BJP
ideology, one can never doubt that the BJP voter/worker
in Goa, loves Goa's identity, her beauty, her culture
and her history as passionately as anyone else. (Okay,
cancel the history bit)."
There, you see. The good doctor has sprinkled a good word
or two on the BJP. What more documentary evidence do you
doubters need to prove his completely non-partisan, apolitical,
dispassionate and objective credentials? So what if he has
damned the BJP with faint praise and sung paeans to the Congress?
You detractors always miss the forest for the trees.
Footnote: Matanhy is neither idealistic nor anti-establishment.
He is as pragmatic as they come. The man successfully lead a
real movement on the ground 3 decades ago. He wasn't simply
a doll anointed as Convener on account of a fair and lovely face.
Matanhy was also very much part of the establishment. We shall
take a pass on the "virulently opposes" malapropism.
