New Year at Xavier's
The new academic year 2008-09 was formally initiated at St. Xavier's
College on the 23rd of June 2008 by the patron of the college, His
Grace, Archbishop Patriarch, Filipe Neri Ferrao. In his homily, His
Grace dwelt on the various facets of faith, in keeping with the theme
of the Eucharistic celebration, 'Live in faith, Spread the Good
News'. He stressed on how the challenge open to all was to promote
communion, fellowship and understanding. In his remarks as the Chief
Guest for the day, Archbishop Patriarch, Filipe Neri Ferrao, in his
few words congratulated all the meritorious students. He spoke about
the need of co-operation that was essential to make any task
successful and appreciated the efforts of all those who worked
towards creating an environment that was conducive to the progress
evident at St. Xavier's College.
The Eucharistic celebration was followed by a brief cultural
programme. In his opening address the Principal of the College,
Principal Newman Fernandes, highlighted the excellent results that
the students of the College had secured at the recently held Third
Year exams. He also revealed how the college had grown in terms of
infrastructure, the number of courses offered and research
activities. He thanked the Archbishop Patriarch for his constant
support. Concluding his address he encouraged all the 'stakeholders'
to keep thinking of measures that would make St. Xavier's College
even more progressive.
The 143 meritorious students who secured distinctions at the Third
Year exams and the students whose projects were
nominated as best projects from their respective departments at the
recently concluded Third Year exams were felicitated at the hands of
the Archbishop Patriarch during the programme. The cultural programme
was compered by Mr. Lyndon Pinto of the SYBA. The programme for the
day was co-ordinated by Ms. Sabina Sales.
