Today 1st November 2006 the 19th Chief of Naval Staff
Admiral Sureesh Mehta PVSM "Param Vishit Seva Medal"
AVSM, (Ati Vishit Seva Medal' a post Independence born
(18/8/1947) incumbent took office of one of the arms
of the Defence forces viz the Indian Navy.

For Goa there is some reason to rejoice, as Admiral
Mehta then promoted in 1995 as Rear Admiral was
appointed the Flag officer Comanding Area Goa and was
based at our famous Dabolim Naval Base.

His spouse Ms Maria Teresa Mehta hails from the
illustrious Goan family of late Dr Jack de Sequeira
leader of the United Goans Party the Father of the
Opinion Poll 16/1/1967 and ex MP late Erasmo de
Sequeira. The Mehta's have two children.

With this Goan connection it is expected that
Admiral Mehta would pay special attention to
a) the Dabolim issue where allegations and counter
allegations are raging high on the reluctance of the
Naval authorities at Dabolim to hand over the land for
expanding the civilian airport.

b) Admiral Mehta could also take up in right earnest
the transfer of the entire Naval activities to the INS
Kadamba at Karwar so that large tracts of land is made
available for the airport.

c) There are several issues pertaining to staff in
Indian Navy which Admiral Mehta could resolve in the
interests of the people of Goa.

d) Finally a very important issue which has since 2001
been in the news, the debarring of the Catholic
faithful to the Island of Anjediv which is of
historical importance to this State . It is the
island where the Portuguese first set foot before
entering Goa on 25/11/1510. There are also the ruined
Chapel of St Francis de Assisi which has reached its
present state of ruination owing to the neglect by the
Naval authorities on the Island besides that the
Church which bears the insignia of the Mother Church
-- viz Nossa Senhora de Brotas which has built (in
1500) nearly 150 years before the Taj Mahal and before
the birth of St Francis Xavier the Patron Saint of
Goa.

For reasons unknown this island has been declared out
of bounds for the religious faithful who have been
celebrating two feasts one on 2nd February "Zorichem
Saibinn" and Feast of St Francis de Assisi on 4th
October in terms of the agreement of handing over the
Island for the Sea bird project, which issue was
raised in Parliament by our Rajya Sabha MP Mr
Shantaram L Naik making a forceful plea to allow the
faithful to celebrate the Feast with due security
considerations.

It is hoped that with the elevation of Admiral Mehta
to this august office the Archdiocese of Goa and Daman
and the CM besides the Members of Parliament
representing Goa will take up these matter with the
CNS and pursue these issues.
