GOACOM DAILY NEWS CLIPPINGS 07 January, 2005 AIR SAHARA AIRCRAFT CRASH-LANDS, ALL SAFE: Dabolim airport could have been a scene of major disaster on late Thursday (Jan 6) night, but thanks to the good fortune of the two pilots and two crew members, a major mishap was averted on the runway of the State's airport at 10.35 pm. All the occupants of the plane are reportedly safe and put up in a hotel in the port town. An Air Sahara 52-seater aicraft on its return flight to Dabolim after offloading passengers at Mumbai developed a technical sang and crash-landed at Dabolim. The plane, which had left Dabolim at 8 pm, had returned back empty from Mumbai to pick up the extra rush of passengers on its list. (GT) CONCERNED CITIZENS WANT WITHDRAWAL OF CD: What was the intention of the present BJP government to screen the documentary "Goa Freedom Struggle" to young school children? Was it to teach the hisotry of Goa or to spread the ideology of hate? Was it to unite the communities or to divide them along communal lies? These were the most repeatedly asked questions by some scholars and concerned citizens gathered on January 6 to view the documentary at the Xavier Centre for Historical Research wherein the overwhelming consensus was the government should withdraw the doucmentary and destroy it. The governent script committee member, Mr Flaviano Dias, who was present for the screening, drew much flak from the audience that wanted to know how the committee okayed the film despite the glaring errors. (NT) SANITATION STATUS: As part of the groundwork to achieve the objective of making Goa an 'open defecation-free society', a baseline survey will be conducted in the State to know the sanitation status shortly. The sanitation project has the technical assistance from Water and Sanitation Programme, South Asia, an arm of the World Bank. (H) NO DETOUR FROM 'GOA 365 DAYS': Tourism Minister Matanhy Saldanha has sought to put a lid on the controversy over the slogan for Goa Tourism on Thursday, stating that the line, Goa Goa 365 Days, will remain unchanged. (GT) MUMBAI HOTELS FULL AS "PRAVASI DIVAS" DAWNS: The five-star hotels in the city are full to the capacity as non-resident Indians and people of Indian orgin are pouring here for the third "Pravasi Bharatiya Divas", to be inaugurated by Prime Minsiter Manmohan Singh today. Delegates have arrived from as many as 60 different countries. About 2,500 delegates have regiustered, of which nealry 1,500 are from overases, said Union Minister of State for Overseas Indian Affairs Jagdish Tytler. Setting the tone of the event, Tytler, who heads the new minsitry created by the UPA government at the Centre, said, "We would do less talking. We will hear what the NRIs and PIOs have to say." (GT) AFTER TSUNAMI: For head constable Pandurang Rane and constable Anil Gaonkar, it was the call of duty as they proceeded to Andaman and Nicobar Islands on 18 Decmber with an offender in tow. Fifteen days down the line, both are thanking their stars and paying obseisance to deities for being alive. They returned from the jaws of death - literally! This has been a second shot at life as far as both of them are concerned. Shell shocked Rane and Gaonkar gather all their wits while recounting the sequence of events as the giant Tsunami waves truck relentlessly off the Indian Ocean. "The ground beneath our feet slipped, a rough sea with huge waves was clearly visible. Buildings swayed as tremors made the ground shaky. (GT) ARTIST TO AUCTION WORKS FOR RELIEF FUND: Goan artist Yolanda de Souza has put up two of her works for auction, the amounts of which will be donated to tsunami victims through Navhind Publications Relief Trust. The works titled "Harmony" and "The Red Ganesh" are on display at Art Chamber at Gauravaddo, Calangute, from 10 am to 1 pm and 4 pm to 8 pm. The characteristic of Yolanda's style is a ceramic-like effect on canvas. (NT) PANJIM PARKING WOES: The capital city of Goa - Panjim - may boast of hot-mixed roads and even four-lane roads but is still burdened with the major problem of parking, a solution which is still a distant cry. While parking is the primary responsibility of civic bodies, the Corportion of the City of Panaji refuses to accept the onus of parking problems in the city. (H) BRITISH NATIONAL MISSING: One Nige Aubrey Watts, a British national, complained to the Anjuna police station that her 21-year-old daughter Sian Watts has been missing since 26 December 2004. The girl had reportedly checked out from a hotel in Arpora, and was to proceed to Bangalore en route to the jungle retreat in Utti. She has neither reached Utti, nor has she contacted her family. (GT) BRITISH NATIONAL KILLED IN MISHAP: A 35-year-old British national Julian Greinzer was reportedly killed in a mishap at Arpora in the wee hours of Thursday morning. (H) SOCIETY OF PILAR APPEALS FOR HELP: The Society of Pilar has floated a relief fund for those affected by the Tsunami tidal waves. Superior General Fr Tony Lopes, SFX, has appealed to the people of Goa to donate generously to the fund which would be used only for the rehabilitation of those in the Andaman and Nicobar islands. Contributions by cheque, faovuring 'Society of Pilar', could be sent to the Society of Pilar, Pilar Deepti Sadan, Institutional Zone, PO Alto Porvorim, Bardez, Goa. (GT) GFA TO SUPPORT VICTIMS: The Goa Gootball Association will organise two big matches and raise funds for victims of the tsunami storm diaster, which took away thousands of lives in India and South Asia. Dempo Sports Club will lock horns with Vasco Sports Club on Jan 8 at Duler, Mapusa, while Coaca-Cola Churchill Bros and Salgaocar Sprots Club will battle it out on Jan 9 at Fatorda. (H) EPIFANY FEAST CELEBRATED: The annual feast of Epifany of Our Lord, known as the feast of Three Kings, was celebrated on January 6 at Our Lady of Remedios Chapel, Cansaulim, with pomp and gaiety. During the festive mass, the rector of Rachol Seminary, Fr Thomas Aquino Sequeira, appealed to the laity to contribute generously for the victims of tsunami tragedy. (NT) TSUNAMI HITS TURTLES: Morjim is feared to be one of the four worst affected nesting sites with almost 50 per cent of the hatchlings reported either dead or deformed. (H) WOMAN ABANDONED: After accidentally falling from a truck, 40-year-old Lalan Bhatikar of Colomba-Rivona was left to die by the truck driver and three of her own villagers. Having missed the last bus to the village, Lalan, a daily wage labourer was travelling by a mini-truck, when the door of the vehicle opened and she was flung out of the vehicle. Lalan was found in an unconscious state by a drunkard returning from a local bar. (H) HELD FOR THREATENING A COUPLE: The Quepem police have registered a case of wrongful restraint, issue of threat and damage against four persons, all residents of Baga-Cuncoli. One of the accused, Brucely Fernandes has been arrested while Menito Fernandes, Igantius Fernandes and Jasmon Fernandes are absconding. The foursome allegedly restrained Elulio Fernandes and his wife Angela on January 5. (GT) ONE FOUND DEAD: Baburai Atma Gauide (45) of Nageshim , who lost his wife in a tragic accident 16 days ago, was found dead in his housed on January 6. (GT) GOA'S FIRST BOOK REVIEW SITE: Goa's first site exclusively devoted to book reviews has been launched in cyberspace and is drawing some interest from bibliophiles, researchers and readers. Located at http://goabooks.swiki.net the site contains dozens of reviews of recenty-released books, interviews with writers and announcements of new books related to Goa. It has been put up by free-lance journalist Frederick Noronha, who says he plans to keep it a volutneer-driven venture. Noronha is involved with Goanet - a decade-old mailing list that reaches nearly 7000 readers each day - and a number of other ventures in cyberspace.
