KURT GIDWANI unravels the making of a TV series made on Goa. Contacto Goa -- a 13-part series on Portuguese culture in Goa is soon to be screened on the Portuguese channel RTPi. The series Contacto was started to connect to the diaspora of Portuguese immigrants all over the world, and already has different editions in Canada, South Africa, Argentina and the US. Contacto Goa is a series with a difference. While all the other shows were aimed at reaching out to Portuguese immigrants, Contacto Goa is to showcase the Portuguese culture in Goa post Liberation. Since the Portuguese inhabited various parts of Goa for over 500 years, cultural connections will definitely still exist. Further on, in later episodes, the programme will explore other regions like Daman, Diu and Kerala, among others. The people behind Contacto Goa are Nalini Sousa, Desmond Nazareth and Christopher Rego of Ultra Films and Video (UfaV). Desmond and Christopher are handling the productin work -- Christopher is also the cameraman and the film-editor; while Nalini handles scripting for the hostess of the show, Lisel Britto. Each episode runs for about 25 minutes and will feature stories about one artiste, one personality, one restaurant that still keeps Portuguese cuisine alive, and one event about Portuguese culture. Nalini says that the programme will reveal some unknown facts about Portuguese culture that Goans will be able to learn a few things from it. The series may also occasionally feature stories of general interest about these places, connected more losely with Portuguese influence. The TV series will indirectly help promote all these areas as tourist destinations. The first episode has already been shot and ready for broadcast, but RTP will only begin showing Contacto Goa in January 2006. There are plans, in the future, to also dub the programme into English, so that it can reach out to a wider audience and be shown to people in places like Mumbai, where descendents of the Portuguese still live, even though they have lost all contact with Portuguese culture.
