PARRIKAR SWEARS BY MHADEI: Chief Minister Manohar Parrikar on Mach 21 unequivocally reiterated Goa's stand of protecting its interests over the Mhadei river row. He was speaking after releasing a documentary "Flowing with Mhadei" at a function organized by the Environmental Cultural and Heritage Organisation, Goa, at the Kala Academy. (GT)

INDUSTRIAL POLICY STRESSES ON INFRASTRUCTURE: To ensure balanced growth in the region and promote industrial development for generating sustainable employment, the state government on March 21 came out with its draft industrial policy with micro-level strategy to strengthen infrastructure, the backbone of a healthy economy. The policy which would come into effect from the first week of April, will have macro-level involvement of the government in venture capital contribution scheme, incentives to sick industries, share capital contribution and employment subsidy. SHOPS GUTTED IN MARGAO: A blaze, suspected to have been caused by an electrical short circuit, swept through the city market yesterday early morning, gutting eight shops and causing loss worth Rs.15 lakh. Fire fighters, with four fire tenders, fought the blaze for nearly two-and-a-half hours before bringing it under control around 5.30 am. (GT)

PASSENGERS LEAVE FOR KUWAIT: While several people from Kuwait are returning to their motherland, eight of the scheduled 51 passengers left for Kuwait from the Dabolim airport by the Indian Airlines IC 575 flight on March 21. According to the carrier sources, all eight passengers have left for Kuwait, either to be with their family members in Kuwait or to resume their duties after holidays. (H)

"WATER SITUATION GOOD": Chief Minister Manohar Parrikar on March 21 assured that the current water supply situation was nothing to worry about. Referring to several media reports cautioning against dropping water levels at reservoirs, Parrikar claimed the situation is being "exaggerated" by some quarters. (H)

DRAW OF LOTS IN MORMUGAO: Mormugao Municipal Council elected its fifth chairperson yesterday (March 21) by draw of lots amidst high drama as both the contests got ten votes each. Lady luck favoured Vidya Shet Tanavade. The chairperson's post fell vacant after Ularico Rodrigues resigned on 7 March, honouring a prior agreement with Vidya Shet. (GT)

VAT PROTEST: The Chemists and Druggists Association, Goa, affiliated to All India Organisation of Chemists and Druggists, will down shutters on 25 March in protest against the implementation of Value Added Tax (VAT). Association general secretary Lyndon D'Silva said that the bandh will be observed in response to all-India bandh call given by the All Chemists and Druggists throughout the country. (GT)

PMC. HERALD CAMPAIGN AGAINST GARBAGE: The Panjim Municipal Council in association with Herald Publications on March 21 launched a 'war' against garbage and garbage bins for a Garbage Free and a Bin free City of Panjim. (H)

SHIGMO FLOATS IN PANJIM: In view of the Shigmostsav float parade in Panaji today, the 18 June Road and MG Road will be closed for all vehicular traffic from 1 pm onwards till the parade is over, according to a press note. (GT)

THUNDER SHOWERS: Strong winds accompanied by thunder showers hit various parts of Ponda taluka on March 21 evening. Life in Ponda town was normal till about 8.15 pm, when sudden cyclonic winds accompanied by lightning and thunder, took the residents by surprise. (H)

NO TAKERS: In an unprecedented development, the election scheduled for the post of Deputy Sarpanch of Chinchinim panchayat on March 21 could not take place simply because the elected representatives abstained from filing their nomination papers during the prescribed time-limit. (H)

MGP TO STRENGTHEN PARTY: The process of reconstruction of the Maharashtrawadi Gomantak Party, which is a coalition partner of the present government, has already been started by the new party president, Mr Pandurang Raut, keeping in view the possibility of the mid-term assembly polls. (NT)

NABARD GRANTS: The National Bank for Agriculture and Rural Development has sanctioned an assistance of Rs.16.09 crore to the water resources department, Goa, for two projects of augmentation of drinking water supply to the water treatment plant at Opa in South Goa and Assonora in North Goa. (H)

POVORIM WOMAN MISSING: A 75-year-old woman, Rose Leela Rao, is reported missing from her residence at Porvorim since March18. (H)

TWO NABBED: Bicholim police arrested two persons, Satyapurush Salgaonkar and Caroline Noronha from Cansa-Tivim, in connection with the theft of a truck and a scooter from Bicholim. (H)

THIS CRAFT GETS A 'BAMBOO': Bamboo work or bamboo craft in which over 5000 artisans belonging to Mahar community are engaged, is on he verge of extinction due to non-availability of bamboo, a sharp fall in demand for bamboo goods and lack of prestige to this village craft for its association with a caste which is looked down upon, said Dadu Mandrekar, a writer and a social activist who has revolutionized the thoughts and feelings of the dalits in Goa. MUKUND IS NO MORE: Mukund Hari Naik, a freedom fighter from Mashem, died after a brief illness at Margao on March 19. He was the father of the UGDP general secretary and Goa Hit-Rakhan Manch spokesman Prashant Naik. (GT)
