(GT) GOVT FOR TENANCY ACT AMENDMENT: The government has proposed to bring an amendment to the Tenancy Act in the next budget session of the session of the Assembly, to curb increasing litigations and facilitate organic farming, Mihir Vardhan, Director of Land Survey Settlement, said while participating in a session on 'Agriculture and Fisheries" at the 2nd Gomant Vishwa Sammelan.Of the total 3,60,000 hectares of land available for cultivation about 50,000 hectares is left fallow, informed Vardhan. (H) NEED FOR CONTRACT FARMING STRESSED: There is a need to restore agriculture in Goa to its past glory and to revive agricultural operations in rice-lands lying fallow in the coastal areas for which, contract farming is a practical solution. This is the opinion of the Director of land survey settlement, Mr Mihir Vardhan, who spoke on "Land Issue and Scope for Contract Farming in Goa" at the Gomant Vishwa Sammelan. (GT) 2 WOMEN DIE OF BURN INJURIES: According to the Porvorim police, on January 1, one Jennifer Clement Lobo (20), while cooking slipped and fell on the gas stove and in the process sustained burn injuries. She was admitted to the GMC, where she died on Tuesday. In another incident, one Sita Laxmi Thapa, a married woman, poured kerosene on herself and set herself ablaze on Monday evening. (H) KRCL MERGER: The planned move by the Central government to merge the Konkan Railway Corporation Limited with the Indian Railways is likely to face strong resentment from the 3,500 employees of the former. (GT) DILIPKUMAR NAIK IS NO MORE: Noted stage director and writer Dilipkumar Naik passed away in Panaji on January 4. Born on 22 April, 1964, Naik hailed from Varkhande, Ponda, and was associated with Marathi and Konkani stage having directed and penned various dramas. Perhaps the highpoint of his career was his cameo role with Mamooty in the film on Dr Babasaheb Ambedkar a few years ago. Naik is survived by his wife and a school-going daughter.
