Festival 2010 *The Casa da Moeda Festival 2010*
Following the enthusiastic response to our first festival in 2009, we are pleased to announce the 2nd Casa da Moeda Festival (19-21 November, 2010). This year, the focus shifts from the house and its history to the other things we love – books, writing and music. All events are free* and open to the public. Seating is limited and available on a first-come-first-served basis. The schedule for the 2010 festival: *19th November (Friday)* *6 pm: Prof. Lee Siegel on ‘Hypnosis in India’* Lee A. Siegel (born 1945, Los Angeles, California) is a novelist, translator , and professor of religion. He studied comparative literature at the University of California and fine arts at Columbia University. After receiving a D.Phil. degree in Indian Studies from Oxford University, he was hired as a professor of Indian religions at the University of Hawaii where he continues to teach. Siegel has been a John Simon Guggenheim Memorial Foundation Fellow, a writer-in-residence at the Rockefeller Foundation’s Bellagio Study Center, and a Visiting Fellow at All Souls College, Oxford University. His non-fiction books about India include a study of Indian magic (Net of Magic), an examination of comedy in Sanskrit literature (Laughing Matters), and an exploration of horror and the macabre in Indian culture (City of Dreadful Night). His novels include the Pulitzer-nominated Love in a Dead Language, Love and Other Games of Chance, and, most recently, Love and the Incredibly Old Man. He is currently in Goa as a Senior Fellow of the American Institute of Indian Studies doing research on the history and practice of hypnosis in India. *7.30 pm: The poetry of Manohar Shetty* Manohar Shetty is one of Goa’s best known and loved poets. He has published three books of poems including ‘Domestic Creatures’ (Oxford University Press, New Delhi). His poems have been widely published, anthologized and have been translated into Italian, Finnish, German and Slovenian. Manohar Shetty has been a Homi Bhaba Fellow and a Senior Sahitya Akademi Fellow and was editor of Goa Today for over eight years. *20th November (Saturday)* *6 pm: Prof. Isabel Santa Rita Vas – An introduction to Harold Pinter* Isabel Santa Rita Vas is a noted playwright, writer, Professor of English literature for many years, founder of The Mustard Seed Art Company (1987—) and a member of Positive People, Goa, an NGO that deals with HIV/AIDs issues. She will talk about the life and work of Harold Pinter, in this, his 80th birth anniversary year. *7.15 pm: David da Silva – Gerard Manley Hopkins: Priest and Poet* David da Silva is a Mumbai-based Barrister-at-law and has an M.A (English Literature) from Oxford University. He has read poetry and literature for various schools and colleges. He will read and discuss some of the poems of Gerard Manley Hopkins. *21st November (Sunday)* *10am: ‘Cholta Cholta’ Heritage walk led by Bookworm ** Bookworm continues its popular series of walks with a trip around the historic São Tomé area. Charges for this walk – Rs.100/-(Meet at Casa da Moeda at 9.45 am) *6 pm: Margaret Mascarenhas reads from her new book ‘The Disappearance of Irene dos Santos’.* Margaret Mascarenhas is a consulting editor, columnist and novelist, the author of the Diasporic novel, Skin, Penguin India 2001 (published in French translation by Mercure de France in 2002, and in Portuguese translation by Editora Replicacao in 2006), and of The Disappearance of Irene Dos Santos , Hachette 2009. She lives in Goa and is the Director of Sunaparanta, Goa Centre for the Arts. Margaret will read and discuss excerpts from her new book ‘Irene’ (named as a ‘Barnes & Noble Discover’ pick). The fourth edition of Margaret’s book ‘Skin’ will also be launched during the evening. *7.30 pm: Sonia Shirsat in concert* Goa’s Fado queen returns to Casa da Moeda for a wonderful finale to the festival. *CHARITY RAFFLE* There will be a raffle held every evening where the audience members will have a chance to win a goodie-bag full of books, CDs, vouchers etc. All proceeds go to Child’s Play India Foundation<http://www.childsplayindia.org/>, our charity which aims to improve the lives of underprivileged children through music education. *If you have new books or books in very good condition which you would like to donate, please email chryselled at gmail dot com.
