CRACKDOWN ON MATKA: In a major crackdown on matka dens, Goa's Crime branch
sleuths carried out a series of raids throughout the State, arresting at
least 30 bookies. However, the police confiscated only an amount of
Rs.6,400 during the day-long raids. (H)
MARGAO'S LINKAGE TO RELIANCE POWER: The much-awaited third source of power
supply to Margaowhich will illuminate the households even in the event of
power failure of the Maharashtra and Karnataka feeders, will be
commissioned later this month. (H)
NUMISMATIC EXHIBITION: The Numismatic Society of Maharashtra, Pune, will
organise the 86th Annual Conference of the Society at the Kala Academy in

GSCB POLLS: The forthcoming elections to the board of directors of Goa
State Co-operative Bank will in all probability be fought, though
unofficially, on political lines. This became clear on Tuesday with the
announcement of the ruling BJP that it would field a party-supported panel. (H)
SENIOR CITIZEN CONCESSIONS: "Senior citizens are eligible for various
facilities such as government identity card, 50 per cent concession in
Kadamba buses for local travel, 50 per cent concession in air travel, 30
per cent concession in rail travel, exemption from new telephone connection
fees and so on. A large number of senior citizens are not fully aware of

BEAUTIFICATION OF PANAJI: "My congratulations to Manohar Parrikar, Hon

STERILISATION OF 'STRAYS': The proposal of holding sterilisation camps all
over Goa in order to alleviate the stray dog menace has been scrapped.
Instead the International Animal Rescue, Assagao, has agreed to carry out
sterilisations in the affected areas, but only in North Goa. (H)
DEAD PANTHER ON CALANGUTE SHORE: A dead panther was washed a shore at the
Calangute beach on Tuesday evening. (H)
MEDICAL WASTE DISPOSAL: After turning a nelson's eye all these years, the
government has now woken up to the urgent need to evolve a system for the
disposal of bio-medical waste in the State. If everything goes well, a
centralised medical waste disposal system may become a reality from
December 1. (H)
SYMPOSIUM ON WESTERN GHATS: A national symposium on soil and water
conservation measures and sustainable land use system with special
reference to Western Ghats region, will be held at the ICAR complex, Old
Goa, on November 16 and 17. (NT)
MANDREM SAPTAH: It may not be as famous as the Vasco Saptha, but residents
of Mandrem village, situated some 30 kms from Panjim, are all set to
celebrate the two-day Saptah festival at Shri Bhagavati and Sapteshwar
temple, Deulwada-Mandrem, from November 15. (H)
MOSQUE OPENED: Padma Bhushan Maulana, Abdul Karim Parekh Islamic Scholar
and treasurer of All India Muslim Personal Law Board, inaugurated a new
mosque, Masjid-e-Noor, at Dabolim recently. (H)
FORMER U N SOLDIER COMMITS SUICIDE: A former UN peacekeeping soldier, Alex
Luis, hailing from Loliem-Polem, committed suicide in the wee hours of
Tuesday by hanging himself to the rafter with the help of a nylon rope.
Luis was running a bar and restaurant at Polem, after serving at Siberia as
a peacekeeping soldier. (H)
BRITISHER DIES AT MAPUSA MARKET: A 59-year-old British tourist died at the
market in the city on Tuesday evening. According to Mapusa police,
Christopher Neville Deaumont, went to the Mapusa market to purchase fruits
and collapsed while purchasing the same. (H)
MANOHAR PARRIKAR-III: "The Parrikars migrated from Chorao, along with a
number of Hindu families, to a safer place, beyond the Portuguese occupied
areas in the wake of Portuguese onslaught in 16th century, in order to
protect their religion and culture. They made it a point to shift their
family deity to Marcela where it was reinstalled with all religious rites
and rituals. Mass migration of Hindus from Goa brought its agriculture and
trade to a halt and Goa, which was once a prosperous area, became barren
and neglected. Realizing their folly, the Portuguese called them back and

Football Club, Thailand, came back brilliantly to hold Churchill Bros to a
1-1 draw in the AFC Champions League at Nehru Stadium, Fatorda, yesterday.
Ghanian import Yakubu Yusif put Churchill into the lead while Jaihan

BRUNO TO COACH FRANSA? Fransa Football Club, who finished fourth in the
local Professional Football League, have started attempts to plug the loose
ends. As a first step, the former India captain and Arjuna awardee, Bruno

GOA RESTRICT KERALA: A fine bowling spell by right arm off spinner Faizal
Sheikh (3 for 38) enabled Goa to restrict hosts Kerala to 212 on the
opening day of the four-day Ranji trophy Group A cricket match at the
