PARRIKAR PARRIES LEADERSHIP QUESTIONS: Chief Minister Manohar Parrikar on Monday parried all questions relating to the news that a change in the leadership of the BJP Legislature party is in the offing. "You can put this question to the persons who are spreading rumours on the change in the leadership," he said when newsmen asked him to react to rumours about the imminent change in the leadership. ADDITIONAL ADVOCATE: The Additional Advocate General, Vilas Thali, has stated that the High Court has agreed that an Additional Advocate General can be appointed under article 165 of the Constitution. According to an affidavit filed by Thali, in response to the petition filed by Advocate JP D'Souza, the High Courts are "unanimous" in that an Additional Advocate General can be appointed by the government. FIVE BRIDGES BY DEC 19: The Chief Minister, Mr Manohar Parrikar, yesterday said that 25 projects would be completed by the State Infrastructure Development Corporation by March 2003. The Chief Minister said that by December 19, 2002, five bridges would be completed. (NT)

"BAILANCHO SAAD" FLAYS ON-LINE LOTTERY: Bailancho Saad, a women's organisation has flayed the State government's move to float an on-line weekly lottery as "a strategy of selling dreams" under the cover of generating revenue. The common people buy lottery tickets with the hope of earning and not as a contribution to the supposedly social sector, said the organisation statement. (NT)

NEW BUS STAND FOR MARGAO: Three major projects are in the pipeline, in and around the KTC bus standan area which is fast turning as the new growth centre of Margao. While the bus stand will get the much needed new looka decade-and-a-half after it was constructed, a centre for service units and a drive-in-market is planned adjacent to the bus stand. (H)

TEENAGER FEARED DROWNED: A teenager19-year-old Keegan Fernandeswas feared drowned as he walked into the Mandovi river on Monday evening, and has been missing since then. Sources close to the family informed that Keegan, a resident of St Inez and a first-year student of Padre Agnel Engineering College, Verna, of late had been insisting that he would not go to college. MANGUESHI-BHOMA TUNNEL: The State government is considering the construction of a tunnel from Mangueshi to Bhoma at a cost of Rs.30 crore. PWD minister Ramkrishna Dhavlikar said that the 2 kms (approx) long tunnel would pass under the accident-prone Kundaim Ghat on which the Kundaim industrial estate is located. (H)

HUNTING GROUND FOR PICKPOCKETS: Despite the low police figures, recent happening indicate that the Mapusa market is fast turning into a favourite hunting ground for pickpockets. Sadly, the needle of suspicion points towards the migrant children selling plastic bags in the fish market. Thievery is rampant in the crowded Friday bazaar but only a few bother to go through the rigours of lodging police complaints. (Joaquim Fernandes in NT)

"SOCIAL CAPITAL": Prof Peter R D'Souza, Head of the department of Political Science, Goa University, has said that urbanisation is the biggest challenge facing Goa today and underlined the need for the creation of "social capital" for fostering bonds between various communities for the overall development of the State. D'Souza was speaking on the topic "Decentralisation", organised by city based NGO, Margao First. (H)

CHILD-FRIENDLY STATE: As part of a collaborative effort between the Directorate of Women and Child Development, NGOs working with children, and concerned individuals, a North Goa district level consultation for making Goa the most child-friendly state was recently held at the Caritas Complex, Panaji. "AMBIGUITIES IN PANAJI BILL": While replying to question, Prof Peter R D'Souza said that there are a number of ambiguities in the City of Panaji Corporation Bill in both procedure and in terms of governance. (H)

SHANTIDOOT DIRECTORS NABBED: Nine directors of the Shantidoot Finance were arrested by the Economic Offences Cell yesterday. They have been accused of duping Goan investors to the tune of Rs.23.16 lakh, 40 such hapless investors had registered a complaint with the EOC in 2001. (H)

WOMAN COMMITS SUICIDE: After barely completing seven months of her marriage, 23-year-old Usha Umesh Sawant committed suicide on Saturday morning, by jumping into a well at Sawantwada in Mandrem. Police said that a quarrel had taken place between the mother-in-law and the deceased, in the absence of Usha's husband. (H)

MALARIA CASES IN PORVORIM: A substantial rise in malaria cases84--has been reported in Porvorim during the first fortnight of October.

PILLION RIDER DEAD: A 23-year-old pillion rider Shabidas Rohidas Naik from Tivrem-Marcel, died while two others were seriously injured when a motorcycle struck a pedestrian near the Colvale Bridge at Mahakhazan-Pernem on Saturday night. (H)

NAVY SHOULD STAY: The recent statement of the Cortalim MLA, Mr Mathany Saldanha, that naval aviation should be moved out of Goa because of its proximity to populated areas is absurd. If this be the case, why not stop all civil aircraft landing as well. After all they carry more fuel and pose as much a risk as military aircraft during landing and take-off. How about air operations at all the major metros like Mumbai which have a much higher density of population than Goa? (Gilbert Menezes, Margao, in Listening Post-NT)

BRAHMANAND TO GET RS.4 LAKH: The Chief Minister, Mr Manohar Parrikar, yesterday said that the State government would concede to the proposal of Arjuna awardee footballer, Brahmanand Sancoalkar, demanding a reimbursement of Rs.4 lakh. The demand had cropped up after another Arjuna awardee Bruno Coutinho was rewarded Rs.5 lakh by the State government. (NT)
