If I remember correctly, Upstart is a drop-in Sysvinit replacement, with an expanded set of features. I remember reading that it's not at all pretty to work with, because of the backward-compatibility. If GoboLinux's BootScripts is not good enough, it may be worth considering InitNG. I remember
