In my case I was not able to add WWW to the Sites.
After hours of search found this solution:

I do it this way, and it works everytime.
I go to Service Settings --- Sites.
If there is no existing www mapping, I ADD it.
Then I delete it afterwards.
Then I can add the www mapping to my appengine app service.
That's it. I hope it helps! :D

Right now I got the 'the site you have requested could not be found.
(404)' when accessing my www mapping for my google app engine app. So
I follow the instruction to delete the www mapping but I got the
message 'This address is already being used.' when I try to add 'www'
mapping.
