I can use www sub-domain.
Did you register your domain in Google Apps?

I had the same experience about a year ago. When I tried it again a
couple of months ago, it just magically worked.

also mine will hit www in chrome browser in windows but NOT from pcbsd
to www. ???

I had the same problem and it drove me nuts for a few days.
There is probably a hidden www mapping already in place (possibly a
hidden mapping) through Google Sites or some other service.
