Check Google Voice, it still hasn't got public api but you can try using
this library:

Sending an email is the most "free" way, though I've found that sometimes it
can be unreliable, and you don't control the source number the SMS comes
from.
If you are serious about providing SMS functionality, you should look into
an SMS gateway:

Is there an easy way to send SMS / text messages via an application?
I read that sending an email to "1234567...@carriername.net" is not
ideal. Has anyone done this with success? Thank you!
