I'm probably just overlooking something, but according to the API documentation located here (http://code.google.com/appengine/docs/java/ javadoc/com/google/appengine/api/users/User.html) the User object should have a public getUserId method on it. However, in my dev environment this method is unavailable for some reason. As far as I know my AppEngine SDK is up-to-date (version 1.2.2).
