A large amount of those 1+ used C++, Java, python or C#, the
languages offered in TC codejam. I don't think the other languages
really increased participation that much. I just wish go-hero would
have overall statistics because getting them individually for each
round is not that useful in

I partially agree, I don't love the data driven part and will have a stroke
sometime worrying about if I sent the correct output/solution, and the
challenge phase in TC is great. On the other hand, I really love the
small/large format in the new GCJ, it gives a chance to have a different
strategy
TopCoder still offers the TopCoder Open and Single Round Matches, so
that format is still alive. On the other hand, GCJ's new format is a
refreshing one, giving us some diversity over a year's course. Moreover, I
don't think more people would participate, currently there are about 6600
active
