Cool demo. I can't really offer any suggestion - can you explain the use
case in more detail?
I feel that animating a Ground Overlay may provide better results.

Is there a more elegant method of accomplishing an animation of mapTypes?
This demo works but it flashes a lot and is hard on the eyes.
