I would hazard a guess it is struggling to determine which is the inside and outside of a bowtie. The 'path' of a bowtie will include clockwise and anticlockwise legs, which are usually used to determine inside and outside e.g. polygons with holes. Handling both holes and bowties may be mutually exclusive? I'd think you need some routine to normalise the bowtie into a nore conventional polygon, i.e. determining the "crossover".
