The Web has been widely used as a platform for asynchronous collaboration. However, Web based synchronous groupware are still rare, especially those using standard Web browser as front-end. The objective of the PowerMeeting project is to make the creation and adoption of such groupware easier, so as to make synchronous collaboration an integral part of collaboration support on the Web.
PowerMeeting consists of a Web-based synchronous groupware framework and a groupware toolkit underlying the framework: o The CommonGround toolkit provides a high-level programming abstraction for transactional replicated data management, which handles data replication, data consistency, and data persistency. The transactional data replication service is built on an asynchronous event handling mechanism implemented using GWT RPC and Jetty Continuation technology. The data persistency service is implemented with MySQL database. o The PowerMeeting framework provides a framework for cooperative persistent session management, which handles session creation, session participation, session participants, and the groupware tools and shared artefacts that are used in a session. The framework is built on a high-level cooperative model-view-control programming model for groupware development. This programming model is based on the GWT GUI event mechanism and the above mentioned transactional replicated data management service. PowerMeeting also refers to a reference implementation of the kind of groupware it aims to create. Such groupware allow participants to plan and coordinate their synchronous collaboration and to move between synchronous and asynchronous collaboration modes in Web browsers.
