In Ubuntu repositories there is libgdal version 1.5 and I think it
supports (by default) BigTIFF. I am not sure though.

In Intrepid and Jaunty it is 1.5 compiled with --with-geotiff=internal,
so it should work.
Is this the same as --with-libtiff=internal? Check [1]

When I run gdalinfo I get the following error: ERROR 4: This is a
BigTIFF file. BigTIFF is not support by this version of GDAL and libtiff

I'm trying to use r.thin before running r.to.vect.
The man page says to use the thickness as parameter for *iterations*.
I'm not sure I understand what it means by thickness.
Any ideas?

The algorithm run an iterative process. At each step its remove external cells
from the feature, and test if the result is correct. The parameter you must
enter to iterations is half the number of cell of your wider line on the
map.

GRASS is currently unusable on my computer using Windows XP.
I am referring to the Standalone Installer as well as the OSGEO4W installer.
