You need to install the grass-gui package with
sudo apt-get install grass-gui
A colleague of mine had that same issue last week and that package resolved
it

Use the PNG driver:
export GRASS_TRUECOLOR=TRUE
d.mon start=PNG
d.rast {mapname}
d.vect {mapname}
d.mon stop=PNG
Then you'll have a map.png file on the current directory, and you can use
imagemagic 'convert' utility to get a *.jpg
convert map.png {mapname}.jpg

To be able to install grass addons in 6.4.3 you need to install the
grass-dev package with sudo apt-get install grass-dev and then issue the
g.extension command
