you should run
sudo apt-get update
and
sudo apt-get upgrade
and grass will upgrade to 6.4.4,

there are available precompiled packages of GRASS 6.4.4 for Ubuntu
[1], you don't need to compile anything on your own.

so I need to compile grass, because the precompiled version is the 6.3
Could you say me how to do that, please? because I never compiled program
before now.
