Hey Tom, that does not mean that you do not have to back up MongoDB, it contains important metadata (streams, users, es index metadata, etc.) that is crucial for a proper backup of your Graylog2 installation.

There are thousands of messages in graylog from day 1, however, when I open mongo, I cannot seem to find any of these in the db?
