Today, in the forenoon, more than ten activists of "Paramanu Bidyut Birodhi Prachar Andolan" (Anti-Nuclear Power Campaign) have been detained by the local police while distributing leaflets opposing the proposed Haripur nuclear power plant in the vicinity of Saha Institute of Nuclear Physics in Kolkata where Dr. Srikumar Banerjee, the Atomic Energy Commission (AEC) Chairman, was holding a meeting with the scientists there.
The activists are demanding scuttling of the nuclear power plant projects in general and Haripur in particular. They are also demanding scrapping of the Civil Liability for Nuclear Damage Bill 2010 passed by the parliament in last August.
