Does the recent killing of a Muslim youth in Kerala resemble in some
respects Trayvon Martin's case ?
On the 7th of this month, Sabith, an innocent eighteen years old ,working
in a textile shop at Kasargod (Kerala) was stabbed to death in broad day
light near his residence just few kilometers away from the dist
headquarters . When police caught three youths who were residents of a
dalit colony ,one of them reportedly confessed to the police that 'communal
hatred' was the provocation for this murder. His accomplices were also
reported confessing to the police on similar lines!
Two deadly knives were also shown as having been recovered from the accused.
In another report ,a web portal citing the police said that the slain youth
travelling with his friend didn't allow another bike(a scooter) to overtake
them, and that provoked the scooter riders to kill Sabith on his stoppage
at next point !
This reporter didn't feel the need of asking why should the accused then
carry the two knives, then.
Going by the few reports giving the details of arrest and recovery of
weapons, neither the investigating officers nor the reporters seem to have
found it necessary to probe further. Why should this 'communal hatred'
toward members of Muslim community occur in the first place to few youths
living in a colony of a socially dis-privileged Hindus? What about the
effects of possible indoctrination by Hindutva terrorists ?Why is there no
further probe, or even demands for probe , by the political community in
the so called 'mainstream'?(Incidentally, the Muslim dominated assembly
constituency is represented by the Muslim League , a constituent of the
ruling UDF). Even as terror strikers of Hindutva fascist organizations
apparently succeeded in producing this much of critical mass of hatred to
be unleashed against Muslims , albeit amongst a small gang of dalit youths,
the media and police have no sense of guilt or shame. For public
consumption ,they distribute the story of investigation of a cold blooded
murder as though there were no terror link to it at all!
Is it possible that they may be doing a service to institutionalize this
degree of 'communal hatred', which, as a social phenomenon does not exist ?
Imagine what would be the case, if the accused were from the Muslim
community and the victim were a Hindu . There would surely have been
instant speculations and reports quoting the intelligence about links
leading to 'Indian Mujahiddin', Lashkar and so on!
