We give below a note on the lovable load shedding followed by a
statistics and analysis of the same.

                                 LOAD SHEDDING

At last the lovable load shedding is back officially. Living rooms of
many households were missing you badly for more than four years now.
It was your presence that had brought the family members together for
at least half an hour every day. Many a marriage was saved with the
improved communication during your presence. Candle light dinners,
anthakshari competitions etc were part of the game. The thieves were
in love with you as they were spared the burden of sleepless night.
Many establishments, from candle makers to emergency lamps and
inverter business people made smart gains. You were a pet subject for
the media persons. The politicians were also having field days
debating on you. In fact you had something for everybody.
                                                                Your fan

Load shedding and electricity scenario

The total installed capacity available to the state is as follows.

Hydel stations - 1895 MegaWatts
Thermal stations in the state - 770 MW
Allocation from central grid - 1041MW

Total - 3706MW

Less given to Tamilnadu - 180MW
Balance available - 3526MW

Peak demand ( unrestricted) - 2500- 2700MW

Reasons cited by government for imposing load shedding

1. Due to accidents at Panniyar and Moozhiyar( Shabarigiri project)
380MW of hydel power cannot be utilized.
2. Due to shortage in production from Ramagundam, Neyveli and
Thalcher availability from central grid has come down to 700MW.
3. The monsoon has not yet intensified. The storage in hydel
reservoirs is very low.

Sound reasons it seems. But consider this also.
With 1300- 1400MW from hydel stations ( against a maximum availability
of more than 1500 MW), 700MW from central stations and 500 MW from
thermal stations in the state it is possible to make available atleast
2500-2600MW during peak hours. Even though the monsoon is still not
active, the mercury has certainly come down a bit resulting in
slightly reduced electricity consumption. Hence the present
availability should be enough to meet our demand. Further, if the
government or the KSEB makes earnest appeal to the public to reduce
consumption during peak hours (in order to avoid load shedding )
people will certainly help to reduce the peak demand by at lest 200
MW. It is not clear why not even a single unit of Moozhiyar station
has started working (it has 6 generators of 50MW each). Also the KSEB
can always release water from the Shabarigiri project (without
producing electricity) for power generation at Kakkad and Maniyar.
After all, the board will have to release water from this dam once the
monsoon intensifies (if there is no generation).the monsoon, if it
fails over the entire season, is going to seriously affect electricity
availability. But at present the KSEB can always produce the normal
quantity of electricity(around 20 Million Units per day) as the
present storage and inflow in to the reservoirs even at the present
rate will sustain the stations for more than one month. Read along
with this, media reports that the state is still selling 250 MW of
electricity during peak hours and 350 MW during off-peak hours, to
other states. (from NTPC Kayamkulam, BSES Cochi and diesel stations –
Manorama News-27-06-2008)
Now you can decide whether the load shedding is justified or not. The
hearing on the Athirappilly case has re-started this week in the Hon.
High Court. You can also think whether there is a design to create an
impression that there is severe power shortage in the state
