‘Sahodarya movement' to be launched *

   *KOCHI: A ‘Sahodarya Movement' aiming to foster harmony and friendship
among different communities will be launched on February 20 at Cherayi on
Vypeen Island, the birth place of Sahodaran Ayyappan who strived to network
upper and lower castes in the last century.*

*Tamil novelist Chaaru Nivedita will open the meeting that will herald the
new movement at the Sahodaran Ayyappan Memorial High School. A large number
of social activists, intellectuals, writers and artists are expected to show
up for the launch of the movement.*

*The idea to launch the movement was the outcome of a meeting organised by
the New Democratic Movement at Kochi in October. That meeting, held in the
background of increasing communal polarisation in the aftermath of the
chopping of the wrist of the Thodupuzha professor, had recommended the
building of movement to promote communal harmony, secularism, progressive
thinking and bringing to the mainstream of marginalised communities.*

*Sunny M. Kapikkad and K.S. Madhusudanan, general convener and chairman of
the February 20 meeting, said in a statement that though Kerala is
considered a progressive state, communal and political clashes are on the
rise. Attacks and discriminations against religious minorities, Dalits,
women, backward communities, sexuality minorities and immigrant labour were
also increasing.*
