Even if are using a 64-bit system you can still have 32-bit libraries.
I'm not sure about it bur I think the configure script will take care of
all flags for you.

an installer, and even a live-CD wrapped around your favorite distribution,
then go ahead. Simply announce it here after you've worked out the bugs; and
when you do see those bugs before you are ready for a release,
