You may also want to see vteapp.c, which is included in the source of VTE.
vteapp.c could be compiled for gtk2, as the binary name vte.
It could be also compiled for gtk3, as the binary name vte2_90.

I personal hates dbus and do not use it.

Single-instance application is good, but not everything should be
single-instance.
