This section of the configure script attempts to determine whether to  
use pkg-config or gtk-config, depending on whether or not pkg-config  
can find the GTK+1.2 library.
Unfortunately, my version of pkg-config on my system *can* detect the  
GTK+1.2 library.  So this doesn't work very well.
It would seem simpler to assign the command (pkg-config versus gtk- 
config) when the libraries were being chosen in the configure script.
