I had the same problem building 0.92.1 from tarball
on an up-to-date redhat 9. Removing --from-code allowed
it to build further, but only until the next error:

make gtk-gnutella.pot-update
make[3]: Entering directory `/root/gtk-gnutella-0.92.1/po'
xgettext --default-domain=gtk-gnutella --directory=.. \
  --add-comments=TRANSLATORS: --keyword=_ --keyword=N_ \
  --files-from=./POTFILES.in \
  --copyright-holder='Raphael Manfredi' \
  --msgid-bugs-address='[EMAIL PROTECTED]'
xgettext: unrecognized option [EMAIL PROTECTED]'
Try `xgettext --help' for more information.
