‘Spygate’ engineer returns to Formula 1 with Williams

Posted: 03 May 2011 10:19 AM PDT

Williams have announced that Mike Coughlan will become chief engineer
of the team following their worst ever start to a Formula 1 season.
The 52-year-old, who was fired by McLaren in 2007 and subsequently
banned from involvement in F1 for two years for his part in
the 'spygate' scandal, has since worked for NASCAR team Michael Waltrip
Racing, but will return in June as work begins on Williams' 2012 car.

"Mike Coughlan is a fine engineer with extensive experience across
Formula 1 and both civil and defence engineering," said team principal
Sir Frank Williams.

"He left Formula 1 in 2007 because of conduct which he acknowledges was
wrong and which he profoundly regrets. His two-year ban from the sport
expired some time ago and Mike is now determined to prove himself again.

"Williams are delighted to be able to give him the opportunity to do
this and we are very pleased to have one of the most talented and
competitive engineers in the sport helping us to return to the front of
the grid.”

Coughlan thanked Williams, who have not won a grand prix since 2004,
for giving him the opportunity to repair his tarnished reputation. He
said: "I am grateful to Williams for giving me this opportunity. My
experience in 2007 was life-changing.

"Since then, I have endeavoured to put my skills to good use in the
design of the Ocelot vehicle whose purpose is to transport soldiers in
safety. I have also enjoyed my time with Michael Waltrip Racing: they
are an excellent race team and I wish them well for the future.

"Now, I am looking forward to returning to a sport which I love and to
joining a team that I have admired for many years.

"I will dedicate myself to the team and to ensuring that we return to
competitiveness while respecting the ethical standards with which
Williams have always been synonymous."

Meanwhile, Williams technical officer Sam Michael and chief
aerodynamicist Jon Tomlinson have confirmed they will both step down at
the end of the year.

"Both Sam and Jon are talented and driven people who have worked hard
for Williams over 10 and five years respectively," added Williams.

"Nonetheless, they have recognised that the team's performance is not
at the level that it needs to be and have resigned in order to give the
team the opportunity to regroup and undertake the changes necessary to
get back to the front of the grid.”

We owe Serie A title to Silvio Berlusconi, says Milan chief

AC Milan president Adriano Galliani has paid tribute to owner Silvio
Berlusconi as the club close in on their first Serie A title in seven
years.
Milan need just a point from their remaining three games to secure
their 18th Scudetto ahead of derby rivals Internazionale and
third-placed Napoli.

And Galliani says Berlusconi’s willingness to fund recent transfer
activity, including the captures of Zlatan Ibrahimović and Robinho last
summer, as well as Antonio Cassano and Mark van Bommel in January, has
played an important role in what looks set to be a successful title bid.

“We said right from the start that our objective was the title and we
confirmed that with our January signings,” said Galliani.

“The team owes a lot to Silvio Berlusconi and the fans need to know
that without his financial commitment we'd never have closed the gap to
Inter.”

He added: “The Scudetto arrives thanks to Silvio Berlusconi who bought
Zlatan Ibrahimović and Robinho with his own money.

“The difficult moment was at Christmas when we had 11 players out, but
the players who arrived in the January market helped us out.

“I think the turning point was in the derby, and now I am just thinking
about the Scudetto.”

Francesco Totti beats Roberto Baggio’s Serie A goal tally

Posted: 03 May 2011 08:58 AM PDT

Roma captain Francesco Totti moved up to fifth on the all-time Serie A
goalscoring chart with two goals in Sunday’s dramatic 3-2 victory at
Bari on Sunday.
The 34-year-old forward’s 205th and 206th strikes took him past Italy
legend Roberto Baggio on the list, and Totti has vowed to continue at
the top level.

“The King of Rome is not dead and he will never die,” he told Sky Sport
Italia. “I know what I can give. I’m happy that I’ve set another record
and taken another scalp, a great player like Baggio. I hope to keep
going at this level.”

Totti equalised twice for his side before Aleandro Rosi scored the
winner in stoppage time to seal a crucial win which moves Roma to
within a point of derby rivals Lazio in the fourth Champions League
place.

“We turned the match around with brute force, strong wills and
determination to win,” continued the Roma captain.

“If we weren’t going to take all three points, it wouldn’t have done us
any good, but we managed to continue our chase for a Champions League
place.

“There are three matches left before the end of the championship and
we’ll be aiming to win all three. Up until two weeks ago they had given
us up for dead, but today we’re only one point adrift of fourth place.
Anything can happen.”

Totti designed a t-shirt reading ‘the King of Rome is not dead’ to
celebrate his goalscoring feat.

“These words were spoken by an English commentator during the derby
last March, when I scored twice against Lazio,” Totti explained.

“And I must say that I immediately liked it, because it’s true, I never
die. On the back there’s a photo of me celebrating a goal, as I always
do with my thumb in my mouth and, on the front, there’s a picture of
the Colloseum, the symbol of our beautiful city.”
Serie A all-time top goalscorers
1) Silvio Piola, 274 goals
2) Gunnar Nordahl, 225 goals
3) Giuseppe Meazza, 216 goals
= 3) José Altafini, 216 goals
5) Francesco Totti, 206 goals
