The Portugal winger has been sidelined with a hamstring complaint and did not feature in Real’s shock 1-0 league defeat by Sporting Gijón on Saturday. “Ronaldo can play only if we take a risk,” said Mourinho. “The medical staff have told me he should come back on Saturday against Bilbao. “If he decides he wants to take a risk and I decide he should take a risk, then we can go past the medical advice and he will play.” Mourinho will also be without in-form striker Karim Benzema and left-back Marcelo for Tuesday night’s clash at the Bernabéu. “The medical staff have told me that he can't play until the weekend and Marcelo also has to be out until the weekend. Benzema could even be out until the return leg against Tottenham.” Meanwhile, Tottenham boss Harry Redknapp hopes his decision not to play Gareth Bale at the weekend will pay dividends when his side face Mourinho’s men in Madrid. Bale sat out Spurs’ goalless draw with Wigan on Saturday and Redknapp is confident he made the right choice in resting the Wales international. “I am very hopeful about Gareth,” said Redknapp. “The feeling was if he had have played at Wigan he might have cramped up on his hamstring. So we rested him and hopefully he will be OK for Tuesday.” Elsewhere, defender William Gallas is likely to sit out Tuesday’s trip with a knee problem and midfielder Steven Pienaar (groin) is also set to miss out. Hope Powell hails England display after victory over USA Posted: 03 Apr 2011 03:58 PM PDT England Women secured a morale-boosting 2-1 win over former world champions USA at Leyton Orient's Matchroom Stadium on Saturday. Hope Powell's side started well against the world's top ranked team on their first visit to England. And an impressive first half attacking display coupled with some determined defending in the second will build significant confidence just three months before the start of the World Cup in Germany. "That was a very professional performance and a big victory for us," Powell said afterwards. "We've beaten the number one team in the world, showed we can compete with the very best and set a benchmark for ourselves. "But we mustn’t get carried away–there were lots of positives, but there's also lots we need to work on ahead of the World Cup. "A performance like that bodes well for the future though, and it's a big confidence boost at a great time for the girls in our build-up to the World finals.” England almost took the lead after five minutes when Rachel Yankey’s corner was flicked on at the near post by Casey Stoney, but Jess Clarke could only help it over the bar from close range with her back to goal. Clarke made up for her miss moments later when the visitors failed to deal with a loose ball in the box and the Lincoln Ladies star volleyed England ahead from 10 yards out. Everton captain Fara Williams came close to doubling the lead with a stunning free kick from 25 yards, but her effort rattled the crossbar after the faintest of touches from Nicole Barnhart. England then doubled their lead after 26 minutes when Kelly Smith picked up a clearance in her own half and cruised some 50 yards before finding former Arsenal team-mate Yankey in acres of space on the left. Yankey's first touch was brilliant to set up the chance to finish, and she rifled a wonderful left-footed angled drive from inside the box into the roof of the net. England showed a maturity in midfield and were confident going forward against their top-ranked opposition, with the American defence leaving huge spaces for the home side’s forwards to exploit. But as Powell’s side continued to press, Smith gave the ball away in the centre circle just before half time. Megan Rapinoe ran at the England defence and as they dropped off the Philadelphia Independence midfielder fired a low shot into the bottom right-hand corner from outside the box. The second half was a more even contest as the USA launched wave after wave of attacks in an attempt to restore pride after their first-half battering. It took 20 minutes for the USA to conjure up a clear chance on goal as England failed to clear a Rapinoe corner in the box, and substitute Stephanie Cox smashed a shot over the bar. USA continued to lay siege on the England goal but failed to find a way through as Powell's side held on for a famous win. India’s World Cup triumph will reverberate for years Posted: 03 Apr 2011 02:00 PM PDT The legacy of India's Mahendra Singh Dhoni inspired 2011 ICC World Cup win can only be determined over time but it is sure to reshape the future of cricket. When India win major cricket tournaments, the reverberations influence the global game for years to come. A glance back to 1983 tells you all you need to know about the importance of cricketing glory to the 1.2 billion people of India. Back then an unfancied and limited side captained by Kapil Dev produced a shock win over Clive Lloyd's great West Indies side at Lord's. Then fanatical popularity of cricket among the greater Indian public was cemented during that unlikely 43-run success. In time the win provided the catalyst for the shift of crickets administrative and economic axis from England to the sub-continent – specifically India. When Sachin Tendulkar made his debut in 1989, he became King of a rising dynasty – not Prince of a fledgling state. The 2007 ICC World T20 Championship win had a similarly important knock-on effect. Cricket in India—from the governing BCCI to the paying public—had yet to embrace T20 cricket. But just months after a disastrous World Cup campaign in the Caribbean they beat rivals Pakistan in the final of the inaugural World Championship in Johannesburg. Months later the Indian Premier League was born and the era of T20 began in earnest – bankrolled of course by the rising Indian elite. What effect then can we expect from Mumbai 2011? Perhaps most pertinently, any talk of revising or even scrapping the ODI format will be put to bed – potentially for decades. This would never have happened anyway of course. England's loveless relationship with 50-over cricket is not echoed in the sub-continent and as long as India continue to play the game, others have little choice but to carry on. This tournament was enjoyable at times but far from a rollicking ride and its length and one-sidedness does little to attract even casual cricket fans in the UK – let alone new ones. But when an estimated two billion people tune in to watch the final it is hard to condemn the competition as a failure. Try telling the millions of ecstatic Indians that ODIs are a waning format. The next World Cup in Australia 2015 is the last in the ICC's TV deal with ESPN. The current wave of joy from this triumph in India will continue for some time though and the ICC—desperate for another lucrative deal—will in all likelihood negotiate a new set of four-year rotations. Tweaks to the exact format are inevitable over time but for as long as India stays in love with the ODI, it will remain a firm fixture in the cricket schedule. Cavani treble keeps Napoli’s Serie A title charge on course Posted: 03 Apr 2011 12:22 PM PDT Edinson Cavani bagged a hat-trick as Napoli mounted a dramatic comeback to beat Lazio 4-3 and leapfrog Internazionale in the Serie A table. The win keeps Napoli's title ambitions alive and moves the Southerners to within three points of leaders AC Milan, two points clear of defending champions Inter. Lazio stormed into a 2-0 lead courtesy of strikes from Stefano Mauri and André Dias, but Napoli fought back through second-half goals from Andrea Dossena and Cavani. At 2-2 it looked as if Napoli would go on to claim victory as they surged forward, but Lazio took the lead again when Salvatore Aronica turned the ball into his own net. Uruguay forward Cavani was Napoli's hero after he won a 82nd-minute penalty and duly converted from the spot to level the match at 3-3. And Cavani then sent the Napoli fan in Stadio San Paolo wild when he scored the winner one minute from time. Man of the match Cavani, on loan from Palermo, insists Napoli will fight for every point in their remaining seven games as they bid to win their first Scudetto in 21 years. "Let us enjoy this victory," said the 24-year-old, who has now scored 25 league goals this season. "Our attitude remains the same: give 100 per cent in every game for this city and this team. "We knew Lazio were a great side, so now we must enjoy the moment and carry on like this." Are England worthy of comparisons to German stars? Posted: 03 Apr 2011 07:34 AM PDT Fabio Capello last week claimed England's rising stars are fit to rival Germany's impressive young 2010 World Cup squad. "I told you that we’ve got some players, young players, who are really good for the future," said Capello after the 1-1 friendly draw with Ghana at Wembley. "We have used players like [Danny] Welbeck and [Matt] Jarvis, Wilshere and [Andy] Carroll. "These are really important players for the England future. Another is [Gary] Cahill – a really young, interesting player who has big confidence – and there is [Joe] Hart in goal. "I hope that people will talk about us like they did about Germany. These players are improving a lot and playing with confidence." The dismal campaign in South Africa appeared to mark the end of the road for some of England's veterans amid calls for a complete overhaul of the national side. Capello has since initiated the process – and the early signs are positive. But comparing England’s developing side to the breathtaking Germany squad that blew away their opponents in South Africa is simply premature. Arsenal's Jack Wilshere possesses all the qualities necessary to succeed at the highest level. He has been a regular fixture in an Arsenal side pushing for honours this season and not once has he appeared fazed by the pressure. But Wilshere aside it is difficult to pinpoint other potential world-class talent amongst the younger players in the squad. Defenders Gary Cahill and Leighton Baines have excelled at their respective clubs and are now quite rightly on the fringes of the national side. But at Bolton Wanderers and Everton, neither are in a position to compete in Europe to gain further experience at the highest level like many of their German counterparts. In midfield England are looking to the likes of Ashley Young, Adam Johnson and Theo Walcott to take over from senior members such as Frank Lampard and Steven Gerrard as creative outlets. The trio possess pace and trickery in abundance but often lack that decisive cross or timely pass. They are three promising talents but cannot yet be compared to Germany's excelling duo of Mesut Ozil and Sami Khedira. Ozil, 22, sealed a €15m move to Real Madrid last summer following an outstanding World Cup and is already an instrumental member of José Mourinho's first team. Mario Gómez has scored 30 goals for Bayern Munich this season. His 23-year-old colleague Khedira also completed a move to the Spanish capital and has formed a formidable partnership with Xabi Alonso in the heart of Real's midfield, and the pair are gaining invaluable experience by playing in La Liga and the Champions League. Winger Marko Marin is marked as another emerging talent despite having played a minimal role at the World Cup. The Werder Bremen midfielder produced a number of eye-catching performances in the Champions League this season. Up front Fabio Capello is pinning his hopes on Liverpool's record signing Andy Carroll. The traditional number nine has strength and power in abundance and will inevitably become a force for the national team in years to come. But the 22-year-old simply doesn't have the creativity of his European counterparts. Danny Welbeck is yet to break into the Manchester United first team and despite a productive loan spell at Sunderland, any comparison to Germany's exciting forwards would be nothing but thoughtless. Germany boss Joachim Low blooded Thomas Muller in South Africa and the 20-year-old repaid his manager's faith with number of superb displays that helped Germany reach the semi-finals. Muller even collected the tournament's golden boot thanks to his five goals and also won the Best Young Player award. Muller’s Bayern Munich team-mate, Mario Gómez, tops the Bundesliga goal charts with an impressive 19 goals this season, and 30 in all competitions. The imposing striker again played a minimal role in South Africa but is clearly an asset for the future. Only in the goalkeeping department can England legitimately claim to spar evenly with their German rivals. Joe Hart has made the number one spot in Capello’s side his own while Manuel Neuer looks set to become a regular for Germany. Capello is right to be optimistic about England's emerging talent, but the Italian must focus on developing a team ethic akin to that of Low’s squad in South Africa if the national side is to realise its potential. Barcelona edge closer to La Liga title as Real Madrid lose Posted: 03 Apr 2011 06:11 AM PDT Barcelona moved one step closer to retaining their La Liga crown with a 1-0 victory at Villarreal after title rivals Real Madrid suffered a shock defeat by Sporting Gijón. Gerard Piqué scored the winner at El Madrigal on Saturday as Pep Guardiola’s men moved eight points clear of Real at the top of La Liga. José Mourinho had earlier seen his nine-year unbeaten home record ended when Miguel de las Cuevas gave Sporting Gijón a 1-0 win at the Bernabéu. Despite his side’s dominant position Barcelona boss Guardiola insists Real are still a threat to their title hopes with El Clasico at the Bernabéu to come in two weeks’ time. “Madrid will fight until the end,” he said. “We have a good advantage but there are many points left to be played for and we are competiting against a very strong opponent.” Reflecting on Saturday’s victory, the 40-year-old added: “We came here to win the match and knew beforehand that we were up against a team that has players like Borja Valero and Cani. “They played well at times and had a great game in the first half, but Piqué's goal helped us win.” Meanwhile, Real manager Mourinho is not so optimistic and he believes the title race is all but over with eight games to go. “While it's still mathematically possible, you have to say it's practically impossible now,” said Mourinho. “You can lose with dignity and we did that. The players have no reason to be distraught. Luck is part of the game and they had all the luck.” Mourinho also hinted that Cristiano Ronaldo will play against Tottenham Hotspur on Tuesday after missing Saturday’s clash with a hamstring strain. “Ronaldo can play only if we take a risk,” added Mourinho. “The medical staff have told me he should come back on Saturday against Bilbao. “If he decides he wants to take a risk and I decide he should take a risk, then we can go past the medical advice and he will play.” Clarence Seedorf shines in AC Milan’s derby win over Inter Posted: 03 Apr 2011 05:34 AM PDT Clarence Seedorf earned plaudits from his AC Milan team-mates after the Dutchman starred in Saturday’s comprehensive 3-0 derby win over Internazionale. Alexandre Pato opened the scoring after just 45 seconds when he captilised on confusion amongst the Inter defence and poked his effort past Júlio César. The Brazilian forward then doubled the lead in the 62nd minute when he headed home Ignazio Abate's cross, eight minutes after Inter’s Cristian Chivu was sent off. Antonio Cassano then completed the scoring with a 90th-minute penalty. Both teams finished the game with 10 men after Cassano shown a second yellow in stoppage time. But while Milan’s goalscoring hero Pato deservedly earned praise for his accurate finishes, veteran midfielder Seedorf was singled out by his team-mates after the 35-year-old helped inspire the Rossoneri to a victory which pushes them five points clear of Inter. “Clarence played a hell of a game, as did Pato, who is simply unmarkable,” said right-back Abate. And Gianluca Zambrotta added: “Clarence did an excellent job both from a tactical and a technical point of view.” Meanwhile, Seedorf himself is hoping that Milan’s win will help them seal their first Scudetto triumph since 2004. “We’ve built something important this season and the time for harvesting the fruit of our hard work is coming,” he said after the game. “Today we regained self-confidence for the next challenges. Hopefully at the end of the season we'll celebrate the Scudetto together with the fans.” Serie A table snapshot You are subscribed to email updates from The Sport Review To stop receiving these emails, you may unsubscribe now.
