I am starting to make a pattern for my husband of one of the leather jerkins from the Mary Rose (details in "Before the Mast"). The ship sank in 1545. Does anyone know why almost all the jerkins have skirts which are shorter at the back than the front? As far as we can tell from looking at illustrations of people living on the land in the same period, it is only the mariners' jerkins which have this feature
