Uhhh... If you have the pattern, you will see they are not.;) Blanche Payne

And I also need to add here I meant *side* front and *side* back seams (in
context it made sense, but just in case....)

> I see the curve of the body which the seam is going around at a diagonal

The curves aren't even the same shape when you see the pattern, the side of
the centre front panels are a slightly shallower curve than the side of the
side pieces. those side pieces also are actual side pieces, meaning they go
right around to the side back

Bugger. I have seen indications of that side front line in a pattern, but
it's not Alcega. It may be Burguen. There is, reproduced on page 8 of PoF
plate 36.

That is close to where the seams of this jerkin lie, but they are curved to
allow the centre front seam be as straight as it can be, even then it's
slightly curved. The ends of the seams don't lie so close to the point
though. The side back curve of the front panel is close to the jerkin
pattern as well. It's just a little more clearly shaped to the original
wearer. The side of the back panels are also slightly more curved than the
diagram above, though they are even more subtle than the front curves.

A gentle curve can help acheive a slightly smoother fit as it gives just
that little bit of stretch. Of course it's probably more noticeable in hand
sewn garments. I noticed it more while pinning than once I'd used my
machine.
