Dear Listees:

I usually change the header of a digest to the subject line of the message i'm answering. But this time i'm referring to the whole digest.

[note: in the following message a few words are in ALL CAPS. That is for emphasis. I am not shouting.]

Please do not top post. Top posting means copying the original message without editing and then typing in your response "on top" of that post. Please edit the posts you reply to and include ONLY the parts relevant to your response. That is common netiquette.

The digest in my subject line (Digest, Vol 7, Issue 344) had ONLY 4 messages in it. And EVERY ONE included the ENTIRETY of a previous digest - that's the same digest over and over and over and over, four times, in one digest.

At least one person included the whole of Digest Issue 342 in their message. That was an accident. Accidents happen. I can shrug off that sort of accident.

Then one or two people replied and included the whole of Digest Issue 342 in their responses. So when the original and the two responses showed up in Issue 343, i got to see Issue 342 three times.

And now in Digest 344 i get to see the whole digest 4 more times, as people respond to the follow-up messages.

Mistakes can happen. That accounts for the first time. I can excuse that.

But it cannot account for all SIX of the other times people resent the same Digest.

No one needs to see the same entire digest EIGHT times.

Please do not top post.

Most e-mail clients and most on-line e-mail websites allow you to edit messages. Yes, there's the occasional one that doesn't, but by far most do.

Please edit the posts you reply to and include ONLY the parts relevant to your response. Even with a message of ordinary length, the whole of it rarely needs to be included on a reply.

And if for some reason someone feels that an e-mail message is inviolate, certainly one can remove extraneous footers, sig lines (unless that's your topic), advertisements, other appended messages, entire digests, etc.

Thank you,
Cranky Anahita
