According to Chip Henderson several years agao, civilians wore black
linings (to hide the dirt) and soldiers wore white.

I have not seen one, but I would say natural color.

I have seen unbleached fabric lining.
I do recall a British navy regulation of the 1790s calling for white silk
lining for officer ranks. In reality, as time went on and silk went up in
price, any suitable white fabric was acceptable.
This really screws things up as my only navy bicorn dated to
