AFAIK you are limiting the memory your VM will ever know about to 4g with
this:

JAVA_OPTS=-Xms512m -Xmx4076m

therefore this

Mem:   8174516k total,  3465712k used,  4708804k free,

does not mean that the VM could use the 4708804k you still have free. In
the eyes of the VM, you're out of memory:
