Could any kind soul offer me a lift to and from the next meeting, from any
station, but ideally from one on, or easily accessible from, the Portsmouth -
Waterloo line?
My husband is offering to bring me, but I would like to spare him all that
hanging around.
Thanks,
Lisi

Hi,
Making sure the BIOS was up to date was going to be my next suggestion. If the
machine is locking at boot then it could well be BIOS related and I was hoping
they might have fixed it.
Did you run the memory tester on the Ubuntu boot menu just to check your RAM is
OK?
Cheers,
Paul.

Thanks to all who responded. Whilst I agree wholeheartedly with those who
said that I shouldn't be doing this, there are 'political' reasons why I'm
pursuing it.
I haven't finally resolved the issue, but I seem to be making some progress
with an external CD writer. (The erratic behaviour of the i

I have an old style computer monitor - probably 6 or 7 years old - which
has recently begun behaving oddly. It suddenly goes a deep purple

It's probably the monitor dying - but before you bin it, *check* it's not

Hi
Ubuntu 8.10 does work on machines with 256MB of memory. The problem seems
that the OS is accesing a bit of hardware which then misbehaves. I have seen
this type of thing before.
Try DSL and see what happens. Try Knoppix in safe mode. Then try Ubuntu
again with the appropriate system twe

I have a big old IBM CRT display (much older) which does exactly that. It
will usually 'go away' if I re-plug the signal cable into the computer, but
it usually happens again after a while.
Not a problem for me as I use it just occasionally to provide a 'head' to my
normally 'headless' NAS, but it
