Problem is now solved, or at least circumvented. The web site works with my new Firefox (didn't with an old one at a public library - maybe it doesn't like old browsers), so I can download the files direct to the laptop.
Thanks for all the comments and help, but I think I will just avoid trying to download anything to the phone in future.
