Getting back on topic...:
Have you looked at MythTV?
Not sure whether it covers your use cases in particular but it's a great PVR
(but also a great PITA to set up correctly).
Mind you, getting the appropriate parts might be even more expensive than £350
but it's a great learning expe

the radio - and it does a good job. The problem is that it doesn't have an
ethernet connection and with iplayer now very convenient, I'm very much
