La amenaza de cierre planea sobre las más conocidas emisoras de onda corta de señales horarias del mundo, se trata de WWV de Fort Collins, Colorado y WWVH, de Kawuai, Hawaii, pertenecientes al National Insititute of Standars and Technology, ubicado en Bolder, Colorado. Según informa el propio NIST en este enlace: https://www.nist.gov/director/fy-2019-presidential-budget-request-summary/fundamental-measurement-quantum-science-and la administración Trump pretende reducir gastos para este organismo en el año 2019, y en el presupuesto de dicho año se contemplaría el cierre de estas emisoras. Para tratar de evitarlo, se ha creado una página web que pertenece a la Casa Blanca, en la que se hace la solicitud para evitar el cierre. Hay que poner el e-mail y nombre y apellido. Al enviar el formulario se recibe un correo electrónico de la Casa Blanca con un enlace al que hay que acceder para validar la firma. Se necesitan 100.000 firmas y a día de hoy van 5.803. A través de dicha página se puede ver, en todo momento el número de firmas validadas. La página web para firmar es la siguiente: https://petitions.whitehouse.gov/petition/maintain-funding-nist-stations-wwv-wwvh El texto de la peticion es el siguiente: "NIST station WWV and sister stations are among the oldest radio stations in the United States, having been in continuous operation since May 1920. The station has transmitted the official US Time for nearly 100 years, and is an instrumental part in the telecommunications field, ranging from broadcasting to scientific research and education. Additionally, these stations transmit marine storm warnings from the National Weather Service, GPS satellite health reports, and specific information concerning current solar activity, and radio propagation conditions. These broadcasts are an essential resource to the worldwide communications industry. This petition requests continued funding of these stations be maintained into the 21st century and beyond to ensure future operations."
