The government is working on an elaborate plan to
provide publicity to the right to information (RTI)
Act with the information and broadcasting ministry
asked to formulate a detailed media plan for the
purpose.

Billed one of the most important legislations of
post-independent India, the Act came into force from
October 12 last, and confers citizens with the right
to secure information from the government.

"The department of personnel and training (DoPT) is
pressing for a revised media plan for publicity of the
RTI Act", sources said.

Press Information Bureau (PIB), All India Radio (AIR)
and Doordarshan have been asked to expedite the plan
for publicity of the RTI Act, "duly incorporating the
consequential changes in expenditure", sources said.

Under the RTI Act, citizens can acquire information
from specially constituted information commissions in
any form including records, documents, memos, e-mails,
opinions, advices, press releases, circulars, orders,
logbooks, contracts, reports, papers, samples, models,
and data material held in any electronic form.

Although a dedicated portal -- rti.gov.in -- has been
set up, the government is keen that the rights
conferred on citizens through the Act need to be
disseminated.

Since, online uploading of the documents by various
UTs and state governments and departments are not yet
complete, the portal presently has a limited reach as
only those departments have been listed, whose
documents are either uploaded on this portal, or
appropriate links have been set to their websites for
RTI related information.

The Act covers bodies like central government, the
state governments, Panchayati Raj institutions & local
bodies, bodies that are established, constituted,
owned, controlled or substantially financed by the
government including NGOs.
