The DINUM is there to insure there is only one entry. It really shouldn't
be changed. Setting the piece directly and redoing the index is appropriate
in this case.
Using "Parameter files" isn't done much any more though. Newer applications

My personal opinion is that the best meritocracies are the ones
designed, implemented and maintained by the community in focus. There
are some good examples, for example the Apache Foundation for one, and
it would be very helpful to know what others think are other good
examples to learn from.
But
Thanks, Joseph.
So that raises my next question. What sort of meritocracy would "the board

Thanks,

Thanks everyone for your replies.
I went back in with fileman and tried to edit the file
that way, and got the same "can't edit" error when
trying to change .01 field in file 8989.3
I wonder why they set it up that way.
In Nancy's install script, she directs one to do the
sort of direct setting
File 8989.3, field .01 is a DINUM'ed field (the input transform is in fact
S DINUM=1). DINUM'ed fields may not be edited. The reason for this is that
most DINUM'ed fields are of the form S DINUM=X, and since X is the value in
the .01 field, any change in X would change the subscript ... and it's

DINUM is a variable that when you set it tells FileMan to use that
number as the IEN/record #/NUMBER/.001 field. DINUM is mostly used when
a record is to be added to a file who's .01 field Points To another file
so the IENs are kept in sync. With each other. A good example is the:
RAD/NUC
A DINUM'd field is one that ensures that the internal entry number (IEN) for the global node is identical to the .01 field of the data node. Hope this makes sense.

What is a "metocracy?" Did you mean to say "meritocracy?"
Thanks,
Bill

I am getting an error from FILE^DIE that I don't
understand: "A DINUMed field cannot be processed by
this utility."
Here is a debug log that shows the FDA that I am
